Popeye The Sailor 1933-1938 Volume 1 includes more than nine hours of cartoons -- 58 (7- to10-minute) theatrical black-and white-shorts and two two-reeler 20-minute color cartoons. The 32 theatrical shorts included in this 2-disc package may be among the most influential and significant of the Popeye the Sailor series. These shorts were released from 1941-1943, and among them are Popeye’s war years cartoons, including one where he enlists. There are battles with Nazis in the comical sense and all sorts of patriotic World War II cartoons which are now historical artifacts as well as retaining their charm. Popeye uses his usual brute force and spinach to beat the enemy, just as he beat the bullies in the earlier cartoons.
