内容介绍 :	Tu Zhizhong is a medical doctor who married Zhizhen, daughter of Tu Aicheng out of gratitude to Aicheng for having brought him up since Zhizhong became an orphan. Though the couple has a daughter, Mali, their marriage is an unhappy one. Zhizhen regularly loses her anger over trifles, and Zhizhong feels that he has been done wrong. Zhizhong meets dance hall hostess Liu Ying on the streets. Impressed by Zhizhong, Ying gets close to the doctor by calling on him for treatment. Soon, Zhizhong is bewitched by Ying and is impressed by her maternal side for the care and attention she devotes to her sickly daughter Xiao Yu. Zhizhong seeks a divorce from his wife in order to be able to live with Ying, but his request is refused. Zhizhong resorts to exchanging his identity with that of a dead criminal who has come for his treatment in the clinc. He changes clothes with those of the dead man, faking his own death in an accident by plunging his car down a cliff. Zhizhong is free to live with Ying. During an argument with dancehall clients who have molested Ying, Zhizhong suffers disfigurement from acid thrown on his face by the assailants. The police suspect that Zhizhong is a wanted murderer on the evidence of a family picture found on his body. Ying is compelled to reveal the truth of his identity. But Aicheng and his daughter Zhizhen now refuse to acknowledge the disfigured Zhizhong as their son-in-law and husband respectively. Unable to free himself from his unwanted persona, Zhizhong decides not to defend himself any more and freely walks down the path of self-destruction. (Extracted from the film brochure.)
