内容介绍 : Emperor Kwong Sui intends to choose Zhen, the second daughter of a general Cheung Chui, as his queen. At that time, the Qing government has just lost a war with Japan because the funds earmarked for the navy has been used by Empress Dowager to build the Summer Palace. An angry Emperor Kwong Sui has long been thinking of reforming his government. On the day of the selection of his queen, Empress Dowager, her favourite eunuch Lee Lin-ying, and a dominating minister Wing Luk manipulate the exercise so that her niece is selected as Queen. Zhen is only named concubine. The selected Queen is soon jealous of Concubine Zhen as the Emperor continues to favour the latter for nuptial visits. The Queen is further offended by Zhen's aloofness towards her and so she makes a complaint to Empress Dowager. Concubine Zhen is summoned before Empress Dowager and is publicly humiliated. Unwilling to become Empress Dowager's puppet, Kwong Sui is encouraged by Zhen to follow through with his plot to overthrow Empress Dowager. He relies on a general, Yuen Sai-hoi, to execute a coup. Yuen is secretly ordered to kill Wing Luk so as to force Empress Dowager to hand over her power, but Yuen betrays Kwong Sui. Empress Dowager stages a coup instead and imprisons the emperor in Ying Toi Palace, and Zhen is kept in a cold palace in the north. Disguising himself as a eunuch, Kwong Sui pays a visit to Zhen by night, and learns that a joint force of eight foreign powers is approaching Beijing. Empress Dowager commands Zhen to order Kwong Sui to leave the capital, but Zhen persuades him to stay behind instead. An angry Empress orders her men to throw Zhen into a well. Kwong Sui is in deep grief. When he returns to the capital, he mourns Concubine Zhen beside the well. (Based on viewing of the film)
