内容介绍 : Sima Suet-chung is in love with Hui Kam-cho, a fellow student in the university. But he is forced by his snobbish father Chim-yuen to marry Mung-lan, sister of the treasury bureau chief Ho Sing-yan. The father lies to Suet-chung that he would let him to take Kam-cho as concubine four years later. Mung-lan is a domineering and aggressive wife, and the marriage is a doomed failure. After knowing that Kam-cho has become pregnant, Suet-chung decides to run off with her. As they flee, Chim-yuen catches up with them, and convinces Kam-cho to leave Suet-chung for the time being, for the sake of his future. Kam-cho gives birth to a daughter Siu-kam, and passes the baby to Chim-yuen for upbringing. She leaves for the countryside with her brother, Kam-fai. Meanwhile, Mung-lan also gives birth to a baby girl who is born dead. Chim-yuen swops the dead baby with Kam-cho's baby girl. Believing that the baby is her own daughter, Mung- lan dotes on the child. Ten years later, Suet-chung is promoted to treasury bureau chief. Chim-yuen throws a big party to celebrate the promotion. Kam-cho comes to see her daughter. Chim-yuen lies and tells her that Siu -kam has died. Kam-cho later works as a maid at mayor Ho Sing-yan's residence. Knowing that a special government commissioner has come from the north to probe his dishonesty and illegal practices, Sing-yan decides to make Suet-chung his scapegoat. At the mayor's residence, Suet-chung bumps into Kam-cho and learns that his father has created all the difficulties in his life. He returns home to confront Chim-yuen and demands the return of Siu-kam. Mung-lan refuses to give up Siu-kam and threatens to end her own life. When the commissioner and the police arrive to arrest Suet-chung, Mung-lan is shocked and falls to her death. Suet-chung is arrested and his assets are confiscated. Chim -yuen's dream is shattered. Forced to eke out a living selling used wares on the streets, Chim-yuen and Siu-kam meet Kam-cho, and the mother and daughter are thus reunited. The commissioner who has arrested Suet-chung turns out to be Kam-fai. Kam-fai manages to arrest the mayor and releases Suet-chung who is finally reunited with his family.
