内容介绍 : Teacher Xu Binghong and his newlywed Yang Yongfen return from Southeast Asia to their home village in southern China. Back home, Binghong finds his parents have already held a marriage for him and his cousin Ah Juan. A rooster has been used as his symbolic representative at the wedding ceremony. Although Binghong strongly opposes the blind marriage, his stubborn mother insists that he go through the wedding formalities again. In the nuptial chamber that night, Binghong tries to convince Ah Juan of the ills of a feudal marriage. Meanwhile, Yongfen, who wants to eschew the plight of Nyonyah, resolves to run away but is stopped in time by Binghong. Headmaster Chen encourages Binghong to talk with Ah Juan's lover, Wang Shaodong, on ways to break the deadlock. Shaodong asks Ah Juan to stand up against the marriage. Binghong's mother suspects that the two are having an affair. When the mother finds that Yongfen is pregnant, she shifts her favour from Ah Juan to Yongfen. Binghong and Yongfen successfully convince Ah Juan that she must stand up for her right and marry the man she loves. At a banquet to celebrate Binghong's mother 50th birthday, Ah Juan announces in front of a group of relatives and guests that she wants to sever links with the Xu family. The ossified elders are outraged but Binghong and Chen condemn the inhumanity of feudalism. Their eloquent speeches touch the innermost chord in the relatives and friends including Binghong's mother. The two couples eventually win their fight for their freedom and equality and live happily thereafter. (Based on viewing of the film.)
备注 : Nyonyah was a Malay term referring to a woman born to an overseas Chinese father and a local Malay mother The production company had, at one point, changed the film title on the advice of Chinese communities living in Malaysia and Singapore, but it reverted to the original title when the film was released
