内容介绍 :	During the Sino-Japanese War, university student Bai Junli arrives in Chongqing where she works as a waitress at a restaurant and then a song girl at a coffee shop. One day, coffee shop customers harass her. Doctor Xie comes to her rescue and offers her a job in a hospital for war refugees, which is run by a corrupt chief and his wife. Among the patients is a student Ying Nanping whose wife has died of hunger and cold. Junli keeps this from him, but he later learns the news from another source. After his recovery, Nanping takes up a lecturer post in a university recommended by Dr Xie. Chancellor Song, who runs the university, is too a corrupt man and was a classmate of Nanping. Having done Song a favour, Nanping and his wife came to Chongqing to seek help from him. But he had given Nanping the cold shoulder and refused to meet them. Now Song attempts to trick Nanping into taking up the post of the foreign exchange bureau chief. Nanping innocently accepts, believing he can do a marvellous job without being corrupt. But he becomes Song's scapegoat and bears the guilt that Song has committed and finally loses his life. (Extracted from a newspaper synopsis)
