内容介绍 :	Old farmer An has bought a cut of meat to celebrate the New Year with his daughters Daniu and Xiaoniu and son Bao'er. But the meat is grabbed by a dog, Ah Hua, owned by landlord Grand Old Master Wu. Bao'er tries to snatch the meat back from the dog, but is scratched by the dog and sustains serious wounds. An, in a desperate attempt to save his son, kills Ah Hua. The Wus plans to ask An to pay his life for killing their dog. But because a grandson is born to Master Wu, he spares An's life. Instead, he asks An to bury the dog in a coffin and to perform a full set of mourning rituals. A dejected An returns home only to find that Bao'er has died. Shocked, An vomits blood and collapses. Before he dies, An instructs Daniu to marry a neighbour Dawang. A wedding date is fixed, but old Master Wu orders that Daniu be brought into his house to serve as his maid. Dawang comes forward to argue with the Wus but is beaten up. To save Dawang, Daniu yields. As their wedding day approaches, the lovers retreat into despair. But fate plays its hand as Wu suddenly dies from an illness. Thus, Daniu and Dawang are married. The couple soon raise several children but then a famine hits them. Without food supply, Daniu has to feed her baby with her own fresh blood. Dawang decides to feed his starving family with the seeds of his crops. But the Wus come to their home and force him to pay the outstanding land tax.
