内容介绍 : Lung Kwai-sun is a Qing-era country gentry in the village of Tai Leung. He and brother-in-law Chung Fung-ying act in collusion with each other and are offered bribes by Chiu Pak-tong to give false evidence against Madam Ho, Pak-tong's sister-in-law, stating that her baby born after its father's death is not of the Chiu bloodline. A distressed Madam Ho commits suicide as a result. That year, a son is born to the elderly Kwai-sun and is named Ah Dau. Being spoilt by his mother, Ah Dau grows up as an uncontrolled brat, neglecting his studies and indulging himself in gambling and fun. Keen to have a grandson, Ah Dau's mother pressures him to marry. Fung-ying, who covets after the family fortune, lures Third Aunt with a promise of gain to have her adopted daughter, Siu-hung, married off to Ah Dau. After the marriage, Siu-hung attempts to inspire Ah Dau, but Ah Dau continues his philandering behaviour. Bewitched by opera actress Fa Yim-neung, Ah Dau is locked into a rivalry with dandy Wong Wan as to who is the richer man. At this point, the government has dispatched a commissioner to investigate the criminal activities of Kwai-sun. Mistaking a barber for the commissioner, Kwai-sun and Fung-ying wine and dine him, and compel Siu-hung to serve a dinner companion. The real commissioner Lee turns up. Recognising Siu-hung as his long lost daughter, he admonishes Kwai-sun for shameless behaviour, and takes Siu-hung away. Kwai-sun empties his coffers to offer all he has as bribes. Ah Dau now comes home with his companions. They carry away the fortune to compete with the dandy. An indignant Kwai-sun drops dead out of anger. The fortune is brought to the home of Yim-neung , who runs away with the fortune together with Wan. Ah Dau returns home to find that he has lost everything, including his wife. Reduced to penury, Ah Dau is degraded to begging on the streets. (Extracted from the film handbill)
