内容介绍 :	Yin-kwai has gone to sit the public exam in the capital for the past three years and nothing has been heard from him. His wife Sau, his mother, and brother, Yin-kwai, are left at home selling paintings and calligraphy to make a living. Yin -kwai is engaged to a girl from the Wong family, Wai-ying, but her father, thinking that Yin-kwai's family has fallen socially, decides to deny the engagement by entrapping Yin-kwai in a murder case to put him in jail. Ying goes to tell Sau that Yin-kwai has been imprisoned, and when Yin-kwai's mother is informed of the incident, shocked and exasperated, she dies. Sau then resorts to taking the case to the county official but she is beaten into leaving the courtroom. She decides to go to the capital to look for her husband and seek justice. In the meantime, Hin-kwai has become the number one scholar in the national exam. However, as he has refused an arranged marriage with the daughter of the Prime Minister, he is forced into exile by being assigned to the outer reaches of the empire. There, as he gains credit by suppressing a barbarian uprising, he is ennobled, and posted back to the capital. Hin-kwai is the chief justice presiding over Sau's trial. He recognises that the plaintiff is actually his own wife. He then moves the courtroom to his study where the couple is reunited. After learning what has happened during his absence, Yin-kwai immediately leaves the capital for his hometown to try the case and rescue his brother. The outcome of the trial is that the local county official is sentenced to three years in exile and Ying's father, the major culprit, is sentenced to three years begging on the street. The poor Yin-kwai is finally able to restore his good name and freedom and be with the woman he loves.
