内容介绍 : A surviving official from the Ming Dynasty, Yuen Tai-shing, determined to retain his personal benefits after the change of sovereignty, betrays the Ming Emperor and succumbs to the rule of the new Ching Dynasty. He works to form a new regime for his new master and one of the talented people he aims to recruit is a scholar, Hau Chiu-chung. He therefore invites Chung to a banquet to make his proposal but Hau shows no interest. At the banquet, Chung meets a songstress, Lee Heung-kwan. Chung is impressed by her loyalty to the previous Emperor and attracted by her beauty. After this initial encounter, Chung takes his good friend, Mo Pik-keung, to visit Kwan again. On this occasion, Chung gives Kwan a paper fan on which he writes a poem expressing his love for her. Kwan gladly accepts the poem and reciprocates her admiration for him. Both parties want to show commitment in the form of a formal engagement but unfortunately there is no money for the official deposit. However, when Yuen realises their need, he exploits the situation by offering Chung good money to work for the new Emperor. Kwan is clever enough to point out Yuen's scheme to Chung, so he declines the offer. After Chung and Kwan are married, the Ching army moves southward to occupy further Ming territory. Chung then goes to Yeungchou to join General Sze Ho-fat in resisting the Manchus. Yuen has not given up pursuing Chung so he sends Yeung Lung-yau to coerce Kwan into writing to persuade her husband to give in. In order to keep her integrity, Kwan decides she would rather die than succumb so she attempts to kill herself by dashing her head against a pillar. Though fortunately she is saved, her blood has stained the paper fan, the token of love from Chung. Keung is impressed and turns the bloodstain into an artistic rendering of plum flowers that signify Kwan's loyalty and integrity. Yeungchou finally falls and a Ching Lord, Dor Yee-kwan, takes Chung captive. Dor appreciates Chung's talent and wants to recruit him to his own service. Under the circumstances, Chung agrees, if Dor will have Yuen and Yeung killed. When Chung returns as a Ching official, Kwan is shocked and saddened to see that her loved one has changed. She returns the fan in despair and anger. Chung, after being told the story of the bloodstained plum flower fan by Keung, awakens and decides to pluck up his courage to do the right thing again.
