内容介绍 :	Mr. Tsui, a member of the gentry in a local village, always speaks of humanity, but he actually benefits at the expense of the people in his village. In order to pay off the debts incurred by her father Shum Sai-hau, Shum Lin-ying forsakes her lover Tsui Tai-keung to marry the young master of the Yeung family, Tin-bo. Tsui gets his compensation by taking the dowry given by the Yeung family. Ying is treated harshly by her mother-in-law. Tsui cheats the Yeungs out of all their money while Po is drunk. Tsui acts as matchmaker for Po's young sister, Wai-lan, whose mother agrees to the marriage because the Yeung family is very poor now. Before his departure for an official post, which is arranged by Lan's husband-to-be, Po warns Ying not to speak to any men, otherwise she will be drowned according to the rules of the village. The night before the wedding, with the help of Shum and Tsui, Lan elopes with her lover in defiance of an arranged marriage pact. Keung advises Ying to model herself after Lan, Ying plucks up her courage and runs away, though she dares not at first. Ying is driven by the matriarch to drown herself in the river.
