内容介绍 :	The story starts in the spring of 1966, right in the middle of the Cultural Revolution. Sung Chuan, a final year medical school student, is from a capitalist family, and his future in communist China therefore seems bleak, and decides to leave China. Sung Chuan's sister, Sung Lan, her boyfriend, Liang Han Lun, and his university classmate, Chin, decide to take part in the escape, too. Each one has a different motive for wanting to leave China, but they all yearn for a different life outside of the country. One day, they are found listening to an American radio programme, and they are therefore in danger. They have no choice but to escape. In the evening, they all leave separately on their bicycles, but are unlucky as the border patrol becomes alerted and start targetting them. However, at the same time, another escapee suddenly appears which prompts the border patrol to target their firearms at him instead. Sung Chuan and the others have a narrow escape and go through all sorts of hardships and swim their way to escape. Finally they reach Hong Kong and gradually assimilate themselves to Hong Kong society but are unable to communicate their feelings to other people. In the end, Chin turns to religion and confides in his fellow believers that it is very difficult to cross the bridge between the two different (ie. communist and capitalist) worlds.
