内容介绍 : Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), the family of Lin Zhaode has been rich, and Zhaode is betrothed to Wang Qianjin, whose family has the same social status as Zhaode's. But Zhaode's fortunes are wiped out by a fire. Wang Chun, father of Qianjin, forces Zhaode to annul the betrothal because of Zhaode's poverty. Qianjin is willing to marry no one but Zhaode, so she encourages him to take the National Examination for success. Before going to the capital to take the Autumn Examination, Zhaode sneaks in the house of Wang to say good-bye to Qianjin. Knowing that Zhaode's mother will be without care after he goes to the capital, Qianjin agrees to lend him some money. She gives him her hairpin, made of genuine gold, as an identification, and tells him to come back at midnight. He will then take the money from her maid Xue Chun, after showing Xue Chun the hairpin. Midnight, seeing the rear door open, Zhaode goes in the house of Wang. He stepped on the corpse of Xue Chun, falls on the ground and gets blood-stained. He rushes back home, and leaves a pair of palm-shaped stain of blood on the doors of his home. The officers follow the blood trail left by Zhaode and arrest him. On trial, Zhaode says he is asked to come to the house of Wang, to be identified by the hairpin made of genuine gold. But the hairpin shown on court, which is picked up in the scene of crime, is only gold-plated. However, the judge, the Emperor's father-in-law Lord Xue Chao, claims that genuine gold or gold-plated pose no difference to the case. Wang Chun bribes Xue Chao, asking him to execute Zhaode as soon as possible. The trial resumes, Zhaode is tortured, which makes him admit the crime he does not commit. When Zhaode is to be beheaded, Lord Bao hurries to the execution venue and orders a reinvestigation. Lord Bao goes to the house of Wang. He asks Wang Chun how the murder has been discovered. Wang Chun replies that the horse-tender Zhang Peizhan shouts "Robbery! Murder!" when the corpse is seen. Lord Bao asks Peizhan why the "robbing" murderer has not taken the hairpin. Peizhan replies that the hairpin is only gold-plated. Lord Bao suspects that Peizhan pretends to be Zhaode by showing the gold-plated hairpin to get the money from Xue Chun. Peizhan kills Xue Chun when Xue Chun discovers the faking. Lord Bao has all related persons be taken into custody. That night, Lord Bao gets someone to disguise as the ghost of Xue Chun. Peizhan is scared and confesses everything. The murder is committed just as Lord Bao has guessed. Wang Chun also confesses to the bribery. Peizhan is sentenced to death and Xue Chao is exiled. Lord Bao orders Wang Chun to consent to the marriage of his daughter and Zhaode. Zhaode and Qianjin gets married after Zhaode obtains the title of the first scholar in the National Examination.
