内容介绍 :	Long Zhiwei and Tian Zhuyun are lovers as they study in the university on the banks of the Jialing River. They marry on their graduation and soon give birth to a son. The family, also comprising of Zhiwei mother, stays in Chongqing. Zhiwei works in the company of his uncle Zhao Jieting. Before long, Zhiwei has an argument with his boss and resigns. Zhuyun finds a job as a magazine editor but loses this job when the magazine stops publication. Both unemployed, they are assisted by classmate Mo Qiuhu with regular hand-outs. Poverty and illness in the family force Zhiwei to succumb to the wishes of his classmates Shi Jigao and Huang Ying, to ingratiate businessman Tan Xijiu with Zhao Jieting to gain from Zhao's political connections. As Zhiwei rises up the ladder, his son dies. He changes drastically. His relationship with his wife loses steam and they grow apart. Zhiwei unablashedly has an affair with Huang Ying. Zhiwei's business collapses at the end of the war. Tan accuses Zhiwei of fraudulent use of public funds and appropriates his cash and property. Tan desires Zhuyun and takes the opportunity to possess her. A tearful Zhuyun pours out her grievance to Zhiwei but is blamed by her husband instead. Zhiwei goes to see Huang Ying and there sees Tan. A struggle follows but a knock on the door stops Zhiwei from killing him. Regreting his deeds, he returns home to ask forgiveness from his wife, but discovers only her corpse. Zhiwei is left alone to grieve over the body of his wife. (Extracted from the film handbill.)
