内容介绍 :	Lee Oi-zhen works in a silk factory in a village. Reacting against the humiliating taunts of her male co-workers, Qi-zhen, together with twelve of her buxom friends, organize an association known as the 'Self-Combing Society'. Members swear not to marry and to be women of independent means. Meanwhile, Oi-zhen's parents arrange her marriage to Hui Chi-kwai, a man from a neighbouring village. On the eve of her wedding, Oi-zhen runs away from home. Her superstitious parents are frightened when she impresses upon them that she cannot break the vow of not marrying. This way, her marriage is finally cancelled. Later, the silk factory is closed down due to economic depression. Members of the Society are dispersed. Some break their vow and marry. Others become escort girls, song girls and even prostitutes. Oi-zhen becomes a servant girl in the household of a tyrannical woman. The years pass. Oi-zhen becomes an old maid. Later, Oi-zhen learns that her next-door neighbour is Hui Chi-kwai, the man who was to be her husband . She sees that he has a happy family and is filled with regret at her decision not to marry him.
