He sells his house and land to redeem Rose but she and her lover conspire to cheat Pak-seung. One night, Pak-seung sees Rose return home with her Japanese lover. Enraged, Pak-seung kills Rose and escapes to Hong Kong. Since Pak-seung's departure, Mrs. Chun is left alone to bring up her son and daughter. She obtains the help of Uncle Mok and his wife, and becomes a farmer. Wai-kit becomes intimate with Mok's daughter Po Zhen. The war intervenes. When his wife is killed by falling bombs from enemy planes, Mok joins the army and soon becomes an influential guerrilla leader. Wai-kit also joins the patriotic army when his farm is destroyed in a storm. Pak-seung, in Hong Kong, is now involved with selling arms to the guerrillas but he acts under orders from Rose's Japanese lover, the head of a Japanese military unit. Wai-kit is ordered to liaise with Pak-seung but he is arrested by the Japanese. As he is being tortured, Pak-seung sees a jade amulet he wears and traces Wai-kit is in fact his own son. Struck by conscience, Pak-seung secretly informs the guerrillas to rescue Wai-kit and have the Japanese army eliminated. After the war, the Chun family strarts to revive. Wai-kit inherits the estate and he is now able to marry Po Zhen. On their wedding day, Wai-kit sees a ragged man in attendance. He recognises the man as the arms-trading traitor. As Wai-kit is about to bring the man to justice , the crowd recognises the man as Pak-seung. Filled with hatred, Wai-kit drives his father away in the storm. However, when his wife and father-in-law explain why his father acted as he did, Wai-kit regrets his action and rushes out in search of his father. Wai-kit finally finds his father dying in the streets. A dying, Pak-seung is able to hear his son calling him "father." (Extracted from synopsis of the film brochure. )
